Overview - Human Society and its Environment

Human Society and its Environment ( HSIE) aims to enable Cerdon students to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to research and develop solutions to a range of issues in order to make informed and ethical decisions as individuals and as part of an ever changing society.

HSIE is offered to students in Years 7 to 12.The courses in the years 7-10 are History and Geography and these subjects are compulsory for all students. In Year 9 and 10 Commerce is offered as an elective.

In the senior school the following two unit subjects are offered:
    • Ancient History,
    • Business Studies,
    • Economics,
    • Geography,
    • Legal Studies,
    • Modern History
    • Business Services (VET).
    • Extension History is a one unit subject offered to Modern and Ancient History Students in Year 12

  • Part III: Historical Investigation: Students carry out their own historical investigation into a particular area of interest.   

Ancient History HSC

  • Part I: Core Study: Cities of Vesusius - Pompeii and Herculaneum.
  • Part II: Ancient Societies: Spartan society to the Battle of Leuctra 371BC.
  • Part III: Personalities in Their Times: Hatshepsut.
  • Part IV: Historical periods: The Augustan Age 44BC - AD 14

Stage 6: Business Services (Administration) – 240 Indicative hours

The Business Services (Administration) Curriculum Framework is based on the National Administration Training Package. Students who successfully complete this course and attain all competencies receive Certificate II in Business (Office Administration). Certificate II is the standard entry-level qualification in office administration. These qualifications comprise units of competency drawn from seven skill areas:

  • information handling
  • communication
  • enterprise
  • technology
  • organisational
  • team
  • business and financial

To attain Certificate II, a student must also complete 70 hours of work placement.
