Overview - Music

Music fosters an understanding of continuity and change, and of the connections between different times and cultures. The nature of musical study also allows students to develop their capacity to manage their own learning, engage in problem-solving, work collaboratively and engage in activity that reflects the real world practice of performers, composers and audiences.

Music at Cerdon College is offered to students from years 7 -12 offering experiences in performing, listening and composing. Students gain an understanding of the Concepts of music through a range of activities catering for different learning styles.     

Students classroom experiences include:

  • Performance guitar, percussion and voice.
  • Individual and group performances
  • Research into Musical Instruments
  • Group Composition
  • Study of the Concepts of Music

Students classroom experiences include:

  • Performance on keyboard, voice and drums
  • Rock Star Assignment Presentation
  • Performance in a “Rock Band”
  • Group Composition
  • Study of the Concepts of Music

Students elect to study Music in Years 9 -10. They study the Compulsory Australian Music Topic and a range of styles from varying genres. Students classroom experiences include:

    • Students elect their own instrument for study
    • Individual and group performances. Performance at Concerts.
    • Composing/arranging their own music
    • Listening and analyzing music.
    • Recording music.
    • Music Technology using midi, mp3.
    • Excursions to see a live concert

     

Music 1

Students are engaged and are assessed in the areas of performing, composition, musicology and aural skills. They study three topics in the Preliminary Course and elect their own study pattern in the HSC course.

Students elect their own instrument for performance and do not require any previous background in music. However, it is recommended that students receive private tuition in their own instrument. Instrument tuition is available through the school.

Music 2

A course designed for students who have studied Elective Music in Year 10 and/ or have well - developed musical skills.
Students will study the compulsory and elective topics through performances, annotated drafts of compositions, compositional activities, discussion of works heard, score analysis, summary of understanding of topics, evidence of research, and concept-based analysis of works studied.

Instrument lessons
Instrument tuition is available at the school through the services of private tutors. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to develop their skills on an instrument, giving them a solid foundation for elective music courses. Currently lessons are available on drums, guitar and flute. For more information please download the Instrument Tuition letter as shown below.
