What the Dickens? Competition
Congratulation to the enthusiastic Year 7 girls who participated in the Australia wide English online competition ‘What the Dickens’. After three sessions of researching, analysing and deciphering cryptic clues, it is exciting to   report that one of the Cerdon teams received a Bronze Medal in the competition, coming third out of fifty-five teams. A special congratulation to Emilie Chen,  Madhuprita Prakash, Maddison Thompson and Tanvi Sreedhar for achieving such a fantastic result.

Get REEL Competition

Youth Off the Streets and Sony Foundation Australia are inviting students between the ages of 10-16 to design a 30 second TV advertisement, targeting youth drug abuse or a related drug issue.

Entries can be submitted in a variety of forms including storyboard, photo sequence, Power Point, script, video, DVD. Students can work individually or in teams of up to six people to develop a message for other young people that they think will help reduce social and health risks associated with drug abuse. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to make a difference and make a contribution to benefit the life of others. Entries are due October 23, 2009.

Youth Writes 2009-2010

Calling all writers who wish to contribute to Australia’s unique anthology of poems and prose. This opportunity allows you to submit your best poems and pieces of writing for evaluation by a group of authors and librarians. Works selected will be published in a national anthology. This    competition is organised by a local school for school       students, and is a fantastic opportunity for the many gifted writers at our school. Entries close October 30, 2009.

CSI is Coming to Sydney!

The UNSW is holding two workshops on Forensics and Cyber Crime over the school holidays. Students will be  involved in solving a mock-up crime using appropriate   methods and equipment. These workshops run for two days and are suitable for students aged 15 and over, who have an interest in forensic science, computer science or general CSI curiosity. Due to the ever increasing demand for this     program, the University of NSW has released the program dates for 2010. Looking for something to do during the holidays?

The following programs are available for students during the holidays

CSIRO Holiday Program
This is an ever popular program run at a number of centres across Sydney. The October holiday program involves    students investigating the Da Vinci Code through  Mathematics, Make their own vibrating jitterbug or make your own bouncing ball! Parramatta City Library Writing Workshop:

This is a half day workshop focusing on short stories and easy to learn techniques…find out how you can improve you skills. The program is suitable for students aged 12+. Entry is Free!

Parramatta City Library Manga & Munchies:

A workshop which teaches you how to turn your own photo or picture in to Japanese cartoon art- Manga. Cost $5.

Evaluation of assessments results such as ELLA, ESSA and  SNAP, past school reports or past psychological assessments
Teacher nominations
Parent nominations
Self or peer nominations

Opportunities

At Cerdon enrichment opportunities may be provided for gifted students in a variety of ways

  • In consultation with their class teacher, students may be involved in an independent research project. These projects are designed to cater for the student’s own interests while providing enrichment in a particular subject area.
  • Students may be selected using specific criteria for a particular program, eg. Forensic Science, Mathematics Challenge and Enrichment, CSIRO Research programs.
  • Interested students may be invited to participate in a variety of programs, activities or competitions eg: Poetry, Novel writing or Art competitions. Open invitation is often an effective method to uncover hidden talent.

Evaluation

Each program is evaluated for its effectiveness in meeting the particular student needs through informal discussion with the students and teachers or through formal written evaluation

Opportunties Offered to Students in 2009

GERRIC Gerric Website

The Gifted Education Research, Resource and Information centre provides enrichment programs for gifted and talented students in a variety of interest areas. These programs provide Cerdon girls with a fantastic opportunity to meet like minded students and immerse themselves in a particular area of interest.

The Simpson Prize

The Australian Government along with the History Teacher’s Association of Australia conducts an exciting essay writing/ audio visual production competition for interested year 9 and 10 history students. This competition encourages students to reflect on the values exhibited by the ANZACs during the war.

25th Australia-Japan essay contest

This is a national essay competition opened to students from 7-12 inviting participants to reflect on Japanese culture.

Forensic Science Camp

The camp involves students from around Sydney participating in a crime task force situation to solve a real crime. As an enrichment program, the camp aims to develop skills in complex problem solving, investigative research, collaborative learning and information communication technologies.

The Siemen Science experience Science School Foundation

This is a 3 day holiday program for interested science students.

CSIRO Student Research Scheme CSIRO

The CSIRO Student Research Scheme provides gifted science students with a unique opportunity to participate in small scale research projects under the supervision of practising scientists, in a research environment.

The Somerset National  Novella Writing Competition

This competition provides interested writers the opportunity to write a novel which, if successful will be reviewed by professional publishers.

The Australian Mathematics Trust Mathematics Challenge and EnrichmentAustralian Mathematics Trust

These programs provide gifted Mathematics students with the opportunity toexplorediverse mathematical theories and work on challenging problems.

Campion College Knowledge Challenge Quiz

This is a Knowledge Quiz for gifted thinkers. Questions cover a variety of fields including literature, history, geography, the arts and philosophy.

Tournament of Minds

This is a problem-solving program for teams of students from both primary and secondary years. They are required to solve demanding, open-ended challenges from one of 4    disciplines. Language Literature, Maths Engineering, Social Science and AppliedTechnology. It is also one of the fastest growing national interschool programs to challenge the youth of Australia and is now expanding internationally. It looks beyond academic achievement and understands that excellence knows no boundaries. The tournament process provides a platform for  excellence and equips participants with strategies and skills that will support future success. 

University of Sydney Science Gifted and Talented Discovery Program

This challenging program is open to the top 15-20% of gifted Science students across Australia. Entry to the program is through an examination and programs are conducted through the holidays.

Kids Congress

This program offers students to participate in a congress with other like minded students about social justice issues.

ACMF National Song-writing Competition

This competition is open to talented songwriters and performers. The competition involves students writing an original composition which, is successful will be broadcasted on radio.

NSW Association of Gifted and Talented ChildrenNSW Association of Gifted and Talented Children

The NSWAGTC is an open association (incorporated in the state of New South Wales, Australia) for people who share a common interest in gifted and talented children, with a particular focus on NSW and the ACT.
