Assessment Policy

Assessment may be described as the process of obtaining information and using it to form judgements which in turn may be used in decision making. Formal and informal assessment occurs across Stages 4, 5 and 6.
It is applied to show:

  • the progress of the students.
  • the degree of success of the courses taught, or units of work taught within courses.
  • self-evaluation of the work of teachers.

The assessment is to encompass syllabus objectives and outcomes. A balanced assessment program should be devised by each subject department designed to include a wide variety of assessment tools. It is envisaged that assessment tasks could include formal test situations, research tasks, speeches, practicals etc. as well as less formal observations of students progress.

All students should be aware of the assessment requirements. This should be done through:

  1. the distribution and explanation of outcomes based report criteria for a particular semester.
  2. assessment tasks which give details of the specific outcomes to be assessed, due date, instructions for completing the task, rules and accompanied by marking criteria.

Sun Protection Policy

RATIONALE
Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Two out of three people in his country will develop skin cancer during their lifetimes. Up to 1,000 Australians die every year from this disease. Each year this problem costs the Australian people $150 million.

In an effort to reduce death and suffering due to the effects of the sun and to address the requirements of the Occupational Health & Safety Amendment Act 2000, a Sun Protection Policy has been devised.

It is important to remember that everyone in the work environment has a responsibility to support this policy. Skin and eye protection is important all year round, not just in summertime.

AIMS

  • To encourage sun protection practices by all staff members.
  • To support staff in making sun safe decisions through the provision of sunscreen in all staffrooms.
  • To raise awareness of sun protection practices through appropriate and visible signage.

GUIDELINES
Outdoor activities performed by staff include assemblies, playground duty – which has a maximum duration of twenty minutes, and special occasion assemblies eg., Anzac Day.

  • Assemblies are to be of as short a duration as possible ie, less than 10 minutes especially during the summer months.
  • All staff will be provided with a copy of the Sun Protection Policy in their Staff Handbook.
  • It is recommended that all staff wear hats and Australian standard sunglasses when outside on duty.
  • A ‘broad spectrum’ sunscreen with sun protection factor of 30+ is available in all staffroom locations and staff are encouraged to use it when outdoors eg, on playground duty, arrivals or excursions.
  • It is recommended that the PDH PE staff, who spend extended time outside, develop their own specific Sun Protection Policy.
  • The Policy will be reviewed and evaluated by the Occupational Health & Safety Committee. Responsibility rests with the OH&S committee in meeting these guidelines.
