The 2009 sporting year began with the Annual Cerdon Swimming Carnival which was held at Homebush
Aquatic Centre on Friday 30th January, 2009. The atmosphere was great and it was fantastic to see each house group encouraging and cheering their competitors. The grand stand was a spectrum of colour and you could hear the excitement of the audience. Various cheer competitions were held throughout the day and points were added to each house’s score. Competitors who took part in swimming events received one house point for entering and were allocated additional points for their placing.
Whilst every student who took part in an event on the day should be congratulated, the following students are to be recognised for their outstanding performances on the day:
12 Year Age Champion Ashlee Goodhew 12 Year Age Runner Up Ashlee Lawrence
13 Year Age Champion Tori Duncan 13 Year Age Runner Up Vallery El-Hawat
14 Year Age Champion Erin Laska 14 Year Age Runner Up Nichole Vella
15 Year Age Champion Brooke Tebbutt 15 Year Age Runner Up Lauren Goodhew
16 Year Age Champion Sarah Bassett 16 Year Age Runner Up Stephanie Jiggins
17 Year Age Champion Mikaela Devlin 17 Year Age Runner Up Elizabeth Buckler
18 Year Age Champion Rachel Micallef 18 Year Age Runner Up Rachael McMahon
The Victoria Buckler Memorial 50m Freestyle Invitational Event was won by Brooke Tebbutt from Year 10.
Whilst there was an improvement in house spirit evident at the carnival, our goal for next year is to improve the overall number of students participating in swimming events. Only 99 students swam in the main pool events, with 278 students taking part in the novelty events. Considering Cerdon has over 1000 students, overall participation levels were significantly low in each age group.
When you look at the final overall point scores for each house, you can see the importance of every swimmer’s contribution to their house’s performance.
1st McOscar 1124
2nd Marcellin 1107
3rd Colin 1045
4th Perroton 742
Whilst Perroton’s overall result was significantly less than the other three houses, they need not be discouraged as it was Perroton who won the Athletics Carnival in 2008. They will need to encourage more students from their house to participate in events in order to defend their title.
A carnival cannot run successfully without the help of a number of different people who contributed to make the day a fantastic experience for all students. I need to give thanks to a number of people including: The House Patrons who helped improve the house spirit at the carnival; All Staff who performed carnival duties and supervision on the day; the Staff who participated in the Staff / Student Relay; Year 9 and 10 PASS Helpers who assisted with the running of the events; the School Leaders and the House Captains and House Vice Captains (Sport) who assisted on the day; each and every student who participated and to the parents who turned up to support their daughters on the day.
