American Visit 2007
On 20 July 2007, Cerdon College students had the experience of cultural interaction with 34 American high school students and their teachers. Our visitors were from the eastern States of America, predominantly from the State of Virginia.
With Year 11 students out on Work Placement or Community Action and Year 12 students busily preparing for the Trial HSC Exams, it was up to the Year 9 and Year 10 student leaders to be the hosts for the day and they did the school proud.
After singing the American and Australian National Anthems, the students were placed into groups and the Cerdon students had the privilege of taking the Americans on guided tours of the school. From the Art Block to the Design and Technology blocks the Americans found it all fascinating with many differences to their own schools. They were particularly taken by the Music Block and said that we should enter ‘American Idol’!
We then proceeded to have morning tea with hot chocolate, cakes and fruit on offer. Following this we went to the Drama Room where we participated in a number of exciting games. After much laughter, we went to the field and the Americans experienced the great Australian game of AFL. Unfortunately we were put to shame as we were beaten at our own game, but it did give us a big appetite for the feast that Mrs Ballin, Mrs Cook, Mrs Kirchner and the Year 12 Hospitality students had prepared.
After lunch we celebrated with a Disco before saying farewell to our new friends. For students of both America and Cerdon, the day allowed students to share some of their culture and experiences and to realise that even though we live thousands of kilometres apart we have so much in common. We all enjoyed the day and look forward to the next American student visit.
